Earthquake Today: Tremors of Magnitude 4.9 Jolt Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla
Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir – In the early hours of Tuesday, August 20, 2024, a mild earthquake of magnitude 4.9 struck Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the tremor was recorded at 06:45 AM IST.
According to the NCS post on X (formerly Twitter), the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers with its epicenter located at latitude 34.17 N and longitude 74.16 E. The exact coordinates place the epicenter in the Baramulla district, a region known for its seismic activity.
No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received. However, the tremors were felt across several areas in the Kashmir Valley, causing mild panic among residents who rushed out of their homes as a precaution.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and residents are advised to stay alert for any potential aftershocks. The local disaster management teams have been put on standby to respond to any emergencies.

The Election Commission has officially announced the dates for the much-anticipated Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The polls will be conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 4, marking a critical moment in J&K's political landscape.
Omar Abdullah of the National Conference welcomed the announcement, stating, "Der aaye durust aaye." He highlighted that this is the first time since 1987-1988 that elections in J&K are being held in such a small number of phases, reflecting the importance of the upcoming polls. Abdullah affirmed that the National Conference is ready and will soon kick off its election campaign.
