NEXT Exam is Detrimental to Medical Students' Interests: DAK

NEXT Exam is Detrimental to Medical Students' Interests: DAK

Srinagar, June 24: The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) expressed concerns on Saturday, stating that the National Exit Test (NEXT), intended to replace the MBBS final examination, is not in the best interest of medical students.

Dr Nisar ul Hassan, President of DAK, emphasized that medical students already undergo rigorous training and examinations in order to attain their MBBS degrees. The introduction of an additional exit exam, alongside the numerous exams already required during their course, would impose an excessive burden on students.

Under the existing system, medical students are trained in both theoretical and clinical aspects of medical science. However, the implementation of the NEXT exam would compel students to overly prioritize the theoretical part of medicine, potentially hindering the development of their clinical skills.

Dr Hassan further stated that the focus on the decisive exit exam would inevitably lead to a decrease in students' attendance during clinical postings and ward trainings. Consequently, their clinical judgment and communication skills, which are vital for patient care, could be adversely affected. Dr Hassan emphasized the importance of having doctors who prioritize patient care rather than being mere MCQ-cracking robots with no practical experience.

Dr Nisar highlighted that the NEXT exam is also intended to replace NEET-PG and would primarily assess students on clinical subjects and the practical aspects of non-clinical subjects, neglecting the evaluation of their knowledge in basic sciences. He further raised concerns about potential biases in the viva-voce component, to which postgraduate students would be subjected.

Dr Arshad Ali, General Secretary of DAK, explained that the National Medical Commission has proposed the NEXT exam as a replacement for both the MBBS final and NEET-PG examinations. The exam would consist of two parts: Part I being a theoretical examination with multiple-choice questions, and Part II being a practical examination/viva-voce conducted upon completion of the internship.

Titanic Tragedy: How a Tourist Submersible Imploded Near the Iconic Shipwreck Important facts about the Titanic submarine recent incident

Titanic Tragedy: How a Tourist Submersible Imploded Near the Iconic Shipwreck

Important facts about the Titanic submarine recent incident

Coast Guard verifies that the missing craft is the Titanic submarine and that all five people are dead.

Following a fruitless search for a submersible carrying five persons that disappeared while on a tour of the Titanic ruins off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, all passengers are now thought to have perished.

With a 96-hour oxygen supply, the OceanGate Expeditions-operated 21-foot deep-sea yacht lost communication around an hour and 45 minutes after diving on Sunday morning. The United States Coast Guard, which was organising the multilateral search and rescue operations, predicted that there would be insufficient breathable air on Thursday morning.

ALL Important Facts about Titanic Submarine

- On June 18, 2023, the **Titan** submersible, owned and run by **OceanGate**, an American travel agency, imploded as it descended in the North Atlantic Ocean, close to the Titanic disaster.

Five individuals were aboard the submersible as part of a tourist mission to view the Titanic's wreck. They included a British explorer, a French diver, a father and son from Pakistan, and the creator of OceanGate.

- One hour and forty-five minutes into Titan's dive to the wreck, communication was lost. Later that day, when it didn't return at the anticipated time, authorities were notified.

- After a nearly 80-hour long search, a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) located a Titan-related debris field 1,600 feet (about 500 metres) from the Titanic's bow.

- The conclusions were based on the U.S. Navy's declassified sonar discovery of an implosion in the vicinity on the day of the expedition, which showed that the pressure vessel had imploded while Titan was descending, resulting in the **instantaneous death** of all five occupants within the submersible. The vessel's safety had been a source of concern. Executives at OceanGate decided against seeking certification for Titan because they believed that strict safety regulations stifled innovation.

- An international team commanded by the US Coast Guard, US Navy, and Canadian Coast Guard carried out the search and rescue effort. Several commercial and research ships, ROVs, as well as aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force and the United States Air National Guard supported the mission.
